SeaMonkey ,an open-source project

54296-seamonkey-box     This review of  seamonkey completes my series of browser critiques for this year.
Seamonkey comes from Mozilla,
precisely the same group that give us firefox. So it should really come as no surprise that there’s a lot of similarity with firefox. You’ll find also some distinction. In this review, I’ll primarily comment on the differences.
Mail
assistance (not tested)
The
biggest difference, is that seamonkey supports e mail. Roughly speaking, the seamonkey project got beneath way, when Mozilla decided to split the browser functions from the email functions, with firefox for browsing and thunderbird for email. It’s likely fair to say that the majority of the persons who use seamonkey do so since they want a single combined application for both internet browing and e-mail.
I have not attempted to test the e mail functionality. Today, I primarily use webmail, so I would not be capable of give it a thorough test.
Compatibility with firefox
In the data level, there’s a large amount of compatibility. Immediately after beginning seamonkey, I closed the application and also closed firefox. I then copied the saved cookies, the bookmarks, and also the saved passwords from my firefox profile to the seamonkey profile. On restarting seamonkey I checked that the bookmarks had been as anticipated, that the cookies were as anticipated (I was nevertheless logged into some websites exactly where I had logged in with firefox). And also the saved passwords also seemed to perform. For the record, the files that I copied more than were:
Tabbed browsing
The aspect of seamonkey that I most disliked, is its handling of tabbed browing. When tabbed browsing was
very first introduced a I think for the old mozilla browser a a brand new tab usually opened in the far ideal. To close a tab, you had to make that the present tab (by clicking on it with all the mouse), and after that use the TAB-CLOSE button on the far suitable from the tab bar. It worked, and I came to appreciate using tabs to maintain a number of pages open. But it was a little clumsy. With present firefox, there’s a close button on each and every tab, a brand new tab could be opened towards the instant appropriate with the present tab, and middle-click on a tab gives an option way of closing it. I discover that much more easy.
Seamonkey does tabs the old fashioned way, as inmozilla and in early versions of firefox. So I
find that awkward in comparison with what I have been making use of.
Saved password
The handling of saved passwords is
mostly comparable to that of firefox, but with one annoying exception. I am employing a master essential to help keep the passwords encrypted. When I initial start out seamonkey, it asks for that master crucial. By contrast, firefox will not request the crucial until it’s first necessary.
Asking
to get a password on startup is actually a minor inconvenience. It truly is not annoying adequate that it would stop me from employing seamonkey. I was far more annoyed by the handling of tabbed browsing.
Spell checking
There
doesn’t appear to be any spell checking assistance in seamonkey. I am not particularly troubled by this. However it does imply that several much more typographic errors get through, if I do a sloppy job of proof reading.
onfiguration
While seamonkey is not very as configurable as firefox, it is actually nevertheless highly configurable. To configure, click on preferences inside the Edit menu. For the windows version (not tested), that’s possibly options inside the Tools menu. Also for the preferences, you could browse to about:config to determine additional configuration alternatives.
Numerous, but not all, on the firefox extensions can also be employed with seamonkey. And almost certainly a number of the thunderbird extensions also operate using the e mail function. I do have the enigmail extension installed, for use with thunderbird, and I noticed that this was recognized by seamonkey.
